How Acthar Works

Acthar is a highly purified preparation of ACTH in gelatin. After Acthar is injected into the muscle (intramuscular injection) or under the skin (subcutaneous injection), ACTH is taken up slowly in the bloodstream and carried to the adrenal gland. ACTH stimulates the outer layer of cells of the adrenal gland (ie, the adrenal cortex) to produce steroid hormones.

Acthar is not a steroid. It does cause actions in your body in a manner similar to steroids because it produces natural steroid hormones.

Acthar also works to reduce the amount of protein in your urine to a more normal level.
