Nephrotic Syndrome Treatment

How is Nephrotic Syndrome Treated?

In addition to addressing the underlying cause, treatment of nephrotic syndrome also focuses on managing the symptoms of nephrotic syndrome — lowering high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and protein in urine through diet, medications, or both. Two specific groups of blood-pressure medications, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers lower blood pressure, and reduce protein loss in the urine.

Nephrotic syndrome may go away once the underlying cause has been treated. In young children, 90% of cases of nephrotic syndrome are caused by a condition called minimal change disease that can result from allergies, medications, or no known cause. Minimal change disease can be successfully treated with steroids in most cases. In adults, the underlying cause of nephrotic syndrome is usually a kidney disease. These are typically treated with steroids, immunosuppressive drugs, and, in some cases, cytotoxic drugs. Unfortunately, these treatments do not always result in remission of nephrotic syndrome.

H.P. Acthar® Gel is indicated to induce a diuresis or a remission of proteinuria in the nephrotic syndrome without uremia of the idiopathic type or that due to lupus erythametosus.

Questcor Pharmaceuticals is committed to providing treatment for serious diseases. We are working with leading nephrologists to further study the use of Acthar in the treatment of nephrotic syndrome.
