About Infantile Spasms
Infantile spasms is a rare, yet devastating condition
A catastrophic childhood epilepsy syndrome characterized by both spasms and hypsarrhythmia
-
IS is frequently characterized by[1-3]:
- Onset within the first year of life
- Clusters of seizures
- Hypsarrhythmic EEG pattern
- IS can lead to cognitive and developmental impairments[1]
Multiple treatment studies show that treating early results in a better response
- Patients are more likely to respond to treatment and remain seizure free when it is started early[4-8]
Treatment success should be measured by the elimination of both spasms and hypsarrhythmia
- American Academy of Neurology (AAN) and Child Neurology Society (CNS) practice parameter guidelines cite the goals of therapy as[3]:
- Complete cessation of spasms
- Resolution of hypsarrhythmia
- Prolonged hypsarrhythmia may lead to cognitive impairment[8-10]
