About Infantile Spasms

Infantile spasms is a rare, yet devastating condition

A catastrophic childhood epilepsy syndrome characterized by both spasms and hypsarrhythmia

  • IS is frequently characterized by[1-3]:
    • Onset within the first year of life
    • Clusters of seizures
    • Hypsarrhythmic EEG pattern
  • IS can lead to cognitive and developmental impairments[1]

Multiple treatment studies show that treating early results in a better response

  • Patients are more likely to respond to treatment and remain seizure free when it is started early[4-8]

Treatment success should be measured by the elimination of both spasms and hypsarrhythmia

  • American Academy of Neurology (AAN) and Child Neurology Society (CNS) practice parameter guidelines cite the goals of therapy as[3]:
  1. Complete cessation of spasms
  2. Resolution of hypsarrhythmia
  • Prolonged hypsarrhythmia may lead to cognitive impairment[8-10]
